SMC Transfer Student

Flash back to Spring 2022

I learned in 2018 that my old graphic design school shut down and that my original accreditation did not align with UC or Cal-State Graduate programs. I was heartbroken for a year. Then, I made up my mind to start from scratch.

I studied part-time for an Associates of Economics while at Maker City LA. I connected with the Women In Stem club and the on campus transfer program. With the help of various folks throughout the pandemic and the state of California, I made my way to California State University – Long Beach for a bachelors degree full time.

I wound up going farther than I had originally planned. At first, my pursuit of an Associates degree was a form of closure for the decisions of my youth. It was also motivated by my desire to pivot into a new field. While on the journey, I found that I was far more capable and full of a lot more potential than I had originally believed. I thank my personal transformation to the book “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” by Carol Dweck. I learned that each person is capable of growth as long as they start and stay the course.

Currently, I am in my Senior year at CSULB for a Mathematical Economics Bachelor and Statistics Minor. The biggest lesson I have learned between 2020 and 2024 is to stay flexible, be willing to pivot and always stay open to opportunities. Never would I have thought that a life of numbers and theory was where I would wind up. Yet, here we are amid calculators, mentor-ships, coding, and econometric research.

So, yeah…it’s been a wild ride ˚₊‧ 🛵🌥 ‧₊˚
